Europa, junto con EE.UU., se ha convertido una vez más en el epicentro de la pandemia de coronavirus, ha afirmado este jueves en una sesión informativa el director regional de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, Hans Kluge.

«Europa representa el 28 % de los casos mundiales, con un 26 % de muertes acumuladas en la región», indicó.

«La semana pasada, Europa registró más de 29.000 nuevas muertes por el covid-19. Esto significa que una persona muere cada 17 segundos», añadió. De este modo, la semana pasada las muertes en la región crecieron en un 18 %.

Al mismo tiempo, Kluge afirmó que existen señales prometedoras de que las acciones que han vuelto a tomar los gobiernos de varios países europeos— incluidos Reino Unido, Francia y España— para detener la propagación del virus están funcionando. Así, el número de casos semanales en la región se redujo la semana pasada por primera vez en tres meses, disminuyendo en un 10 % hasta situarse en los 1,8 millones.

En este contexto, Kluge ha reiterado su postura de que «el confinamiento es una medida de último recurso». «El uso de mascarillas no es de ninguna manera una panacea y debe combinarse con otras medidas. Sin embargo, si el uso de mascarillas alcanza el 95 %, los cierres no serán necesarios», afirmó.
