“La insulina crea adicción”, “el alcohol quema el azúcar” o “todos los diabéticos terminan ciegos y con amputaciones”, son algunos de los mitos más comunes que rodean a la diabetes en la República Dominicana, debido a la falta de información sobre esta condición.
Así lo informó el doctor Ammar Ibrahim, director del Instituto Nacional de Diabetes, Endocrinología y Nutrición (Inden), al participar en el Diálogo Libre, en el marco de la conmemoración del 50 aniversario de esa institución.
“Yo no tengo diabetes, a mí me sube el azúcar”, manifestó el especialista en alusión a una de las frases dichas por personas con esta condición que, a su juicio, “es una forma de autodefensa de los pacientes para no llamarle diabetes. Eso es parte de la ignorancia”.
¿La insulina crea adicción?
“La insulina es una hormona, todos la tenemos, todos la estamos utilizando de forma correcta”, sostuvo Ibrahim al citar este mito. “Ahora, la persona que tiene diabetes, en algún momento, ya no tienen suficiente, ni en cantidad, ni en calidad. Entonces, lo correcto es adquirirla desde afuera”, agregó el galeno.
Estos signos anuncian una prediabetes
“Cuando un médico le indica insulina a su paciente, no es porque es malo, ni va a crear adicción(…) La bendición más grande que ha habido para esa enfermedad es el avance en las insulinas”, añadió.
“El alcohol quema la azúcar”
El titular del Inden señaló que durante un censo sobre la afección realizado en el país determinaron que las personas con diabetes toman más alcohol que aquellos que no tienen esa condición.
“Un mito es que los diabéticos toman alcohol porque quema la azúcar. Ese es el daño más grande que pueden hacer, porque el alcohol es azúcar, aparte de que puede dañar el páncreas, que es la glándula que produce el poco de insulina que le queda (al diabético)”, sostuvo el especialista.
“La diabetes deja ciego o con una amputación”
Otro mito común es la creencia de que las personas con diabetes “terminarán ciegos, con diálisis o amputaciones”, una afirmación negada por el especialista. “Eso no es verdad, eso ocurre con los pacientes que tienen diabetes no controlada y no se cuidan”, manifestó Ammar Ibrahim.
El galeno explicó que la amputación en la diabetes ocurre por varias causas, incluyendo la presencia de enfermedades vasculares o infecciosas, sin embargo, agregó que el descuidar la condición es un factor determinante en la ocurrencia de amputaciones.
Durante el Diálogo Libre, Ibrahim y otras representantes del Instituto abordaron cómo el estilo de vida actual ha disparado los casos de diabetes en la República Dominicana, además de advertir sobre la afección en los niños y jóvenes, entre otros temas relacionados con la condición.
