La oficina regional de América Latina y el Caribe de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO), informó que se encuentra en contacto tanto con los servicios veterinarios oficiales, como con los ministerios de Agricultura, Ganadería y Medio Ambiente de los países afectados en la región con influenza aviar.

La FAO comunicó la presencia de casos de Influenza Aviar Altamente Patógena (IAAP) en Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, México, Perú y Venezuela, la oficina regional de América Latina y el Caribe.

Asimismo indicó que tiene como propósito brindarles apoyo técnico y logístico enfrentar esta emergencia.

“Queremos llamar a la calma a la población. Desde marzo de este año hemos estado alertando activamente sobre esta situación, especialmente en septiembre pasado por el comienzo de las migraciones de aves desde Norteamérica hacia Sudamérica.  Tenemos coordinaciones activas con organismos internacionales, y estamos gestionando las vías para apoyar a los países recientemente afectados”, señaló Andrés González, Oficial de Ganadería, Sanidad Animal y Biodiversidad de la FAO.

Es importante señalar que no existe evidencia científica que confirme que la IAAP se transmita a los seres humanos mediante el consumo de aves o huevos debidamente preparados.

Además, González explicó que con asistencia de las representaciones nacionales, a través de un grupo de comando de incidentes liderado por la división de Sanidad Animal de la FAO y en estrecha coordinación con el comité directivo regional del Marco Global para el Control Progresivo de las Enfermedades Transfronterizas de los Animales (GF-TADs por sus siglas en inglés), se está apoyando los planes de prevención, detección precoz y respuesta de los países ante la emergencia regional de Influenza Aviar Altamente Patógena.

América Latina y el Caribe produce el 20,4% de la carne de ave y el 10% de los huevos que se consumen en el mundo, siendo un sector de gran relevancia para los medios de vida de millones de pequeños y medianos productores agropecuarios.

Es por esta razón que es necesario activar cuanto antes los protocolos de emergencia en la región.

¿Qué es la influenza aviar?

La Influenza Aviar es una enfermedad viral que afecta a las aves domésticas, tales como pollos, pavos, patos y codornices, asimismo a aves silvestres, causando alta morbilidad y mortalidad, y que no tiene tratamiento específico.

Esta enfermedad se clasifica en baja y alta patogenicidad, pudiendo causar un enorme impacto y repercusión en la producción de las aves, el comercio internacional, así como en los medios de vida y subsistencia de la población.

A fines de 2021 se reportaron los primeros casos de IAAP en Norteamérica, siendo la primera propagación que ha cruzado el océano Atlántico desde Europa mediante aves migratorias. Posterior a esto, y debido principalmente a la época natural de migración de aves del norte hacia el sur del continente, se están reportando por primera vez casos de mortalidad en aves silvestres. Esto último, representa a su vez una amenaza a la biodiversidad y la fauna silvestre de los países del continente.

¿Cómo identificar los signos de la enfermedad?

Generalmente esta enfermedad afecta a un gran número de aves. Los principales síntomas que se pueden visualizar son: signos neurológicos (como temblores, convulsiones, tortícolis y parálisis en aves); signos respiratorios (secreción nasal, tos y estornudos); disminución de la producción de huevos o huevos anormales; inflamación y/o color rojizo o morado de la cabeza, la cresta, las barbas y los corvejones, inflamación de los parpados, disminución de consumo de agua y de alimentos y por último un aumento masivo de la mortalidad en aves.

Recomendaciones

La FAO recomienda extremar las medidas de bioseguridad y los estándares mínimos de producción en las granjas avícolas, incluyendo aquellas de traspatio que pudieran ser más propensas al contacto con aves silvestres portadoras del virus.

De igual manera, se recomienda aumentar la vigilancia epidemiológica tanto en aves silvestres como en aves domésticas. Ante la detección de cualquier anormalidad en aves domésticas o silvestres, reportar de manera inmediata a la autoridad local, evitando el contacto físico con las aves afectadas.
