La provincia de Santiago registra un incremento en el número de electores que la colocan prácticamente a la par con la plaza del Distrito Nacional, que solo la supera con 4,463 mil votantes.

Estadísticas de la Junta Central Electoral (JCE) indican que en el 2020, Santiago contaba con 847,664 electores, cifra que al 2023 aumentó a 911,703 para un incremento de 64,039 votantes, es decir, un 7.6 %. En esta urbe hay 1,853 colegios electorales registrados, conforme a datos del padrón electoral.

Mientras el Distrito Nacional en la pasada contienda tenía un universo de votantes de 863,284 y actualmente son 916,166, un alza de 52,882, para un 6.13 %. En la Capital los colegios electorales son 2,303.

En las elecciones del 2020, celebradas en medio de la pandemia del COVID-19, en Santiago se registró un certamen a nivel presidencial con 382,610 votantes, de ellos 226,096 del Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) y aliados correspondientes al 59.09 % y 128,136 del Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) igual al 33.49 % de los votos.

A nivel municipal, en Santiago de los Caballeros, municipio cabecera se impuso Abel Martínez, del PLD con 73,692 votos, un 49.62 %, quien competía contra Ulises Rodríguez, del PRM que alcanzó 56,996 votos, un 38.38 %.

Para la venidera contienda, Martínez, actual alcalde, pasa a competir por la candidatura presidencial, en un escenario donde se da casi como un hecho la reelección del mandatario Luis Abinader y donde también entran en la contienda de los principales partidos, Leonel Fernández, de Fuerza del Pueblo y Miguel Vargas Maldonado, del Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD). El presidente Abinader dijo que tiene hasta el 17 de agosto próximo para informar cualquier decisión.

Las elecciones municipales serán el 18 de febrero del 2024 y las presidenciales y congresuales el 19 de mayo.

De acuerdo al calendario electoral, el periodo de campaña interna o precampaña para la selección de precandidatos a puestos de elección popular, se inicia el 2 de julio.

Los votantes en el norte

Las catorce provincias que conforman el Cibao representan el 36.93 % del electorado al aportar un universo de 2,979,849 de votantes.

Se trata de Santiago con 911,703 (11.30 %), Monseñor Nouel 162,601 (2.02 %), La Vega 359,002 (4.45 %), Sánchez Ramírez 137,399 (1.70 %), Duarte 273,559 (3.39 %), Hermanas Mirabal 99,610 (1.23 %), Valverde 134,639 (1.67 %), Dajabón 56,191 (0.70 %), Espaillat 212,118 (2.63 %), Puerto Plata 276,759 (3.43 %), Montecristi 92,041 (1.14 %), Samaná 85,006 (1.05 %), Santiago Rodríguez 54,906 (0.68 %) y María Trinidad Sánchez 124,360 (1.54 %).
