La selección de Puerto Rico se impuso este sábado por un ajustado 88-82 a República Dominicana en el primer partido del Grupo B de la Copa América de baloncesto, que se disputa la ciudad brasileña de Recife.

Los puertorriqueños empezaron con fuerza y dominaron las acciones en el primer cuarto (23-12), guiados por George Conditt, un fuerte pívot de 2,12 metros de altura y 22 años, que juega en su país con el Gigantes de Carolina y que marcó 20 puntos en el encuentro.

El partido se emparejó en el segundo capítulo (23-23), con una República Dominicana más ajustada, que mejoró la recuperación y la puntería y recuperó algo de terreno de la mano de Andrés Feliz, a la postre el mejor anotador del partido, con 22 puntos.

En el tercero se mantuvo un cierto equilibrio (23-21) y en el último cuarto (19-26) Puerto Rico supo contener la reacción de los dominicanos e hizo valer la diferencia que había marcado en el inicio del partido.

El Grupo B del torneo, que se disputa en el coliseo Geraldo Magalhaes de Recife, lo completan Argentina e Islas Vírgenes, que debutarán este mismo sábado.

En el Grupo A han sido emparejadas las selecciones de Brasil, Canadá, Uruguay y Colombia, mientras que el C está formado por Estados Unidos, Venezuela, México y Panamá. 

Los dos primeros de cada grupo y los dos mejores terceros pasarán a la próxima fase de la Copa América, cuya final será disputada el  domingo 11 de septiembre.
