Todos los nuevos compromisos nacionales de recortar emisiones de carbono tendrían un efecto mínimo en el calentamiento, que seguiría encaminado a +2,7°C, o como mucho a +2,1°C, según la última estimación de la ONU, publicada el martes en la COP26.

En su informe anual de referencia, publicado en octubre, antes de la conferencia sobre el clima de Glasgow, del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA) señalaba que sumando todos los compromisos nacionales el planeta se dirigía hacia un calentamiento «catastrófico» de +2,7°C, o de +2,2°C si se agregan los objetivos de neutralidad de anunciados por varios países.

Y advirtió que los países deben reducir sus emisiones siete veces más rápido para limitar el calentamiento a +1,5ºC.

Durante la primera semana de la COP26, o justo antes, 33 países anunciaron nuevos compromisos, entre ellos Brasil, Argentina e India -cuarto mayor emisor mundial- que aspira a la neutralidad de carbono para 2070.

Pero todas estas promesas sólo cambian marginalmente el resultado final que, según las cifras publicadas el martes por el PNUMA, seguiría siendo «muy similar».

Según sus cálculos actualizados, la Tierra seguiría dirigiéndose hacia +2,7°C a finales de este siglo, muy lejos del objetivo del Acuerdo de París de 2015, consistente en limitar el aumento de la temperatura media global por debajo de +2°C, y si es posible a +1,5°C, respecto a la era preindustrial.

Si se añaden los nuevos compromisos de neutralidad de carbono, que incluyen acciones como la reforestación para compensar las emisiones, el calentamiento podría limitarse a +2,1°C, es decir 0,1°C mejor que la estimación anterior.

Sin embargo, algunos de los grandes emisores, como Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea- segundo y tercero mundial respectivamente-, tienen planes relativamente exhaustivos sobre cómo lograr cero emisiones netas en 2050.

Otros, principalmente China -primer emisor de gases de efecto invernadero- no han publicado detalles sobre cómo piensan hacerlo.

«Dada la falta de transparencia de las promesas (…), la ausencia de un mecanismo de información y verificación, y el hecho de que muy pocas de las promesas para 2030 ponen a los países claramente en la senda de la neutralidad de carbono, sigue siendo incierto que se logren estos objetivos de neutralidad de carbono», señaló el PNUMA.
