Conocimos a Jonás durante una visita al Centro Sanitario de Santo Domingo. Era la mañana del martes 13 de diciembre de 2022. Llegó en su motor, se le veía apurado y tenía razón para estarlo. Esa misma tarde, a las 4:00, tomaría con ilusión un vuelo con destino a San Salvador para hacer «la vuelta» hacia Estados Unidos.

Con un secuestro, gélidas temperaturas e interminables viajes en carro terminó la semana y media de la ruta. Lo que nunca imaginó fue que semanas después se arrepentiría de haber llegado a su anhelado Estados Unidos.

Llegó al Centro Sanitario en búsqueda de la vacuna contra la fiebre amarilla, requisito obligatorio para viajar a Sudamérica.

Esa noche llegó a El Salvador, donde comenzaba la ruta, y unos taxistas involucrados con los coyotes los trasladaron hacia la frontera con Guatemala, a unas cuatro horas de distancia del aeropuerto.

El recorrido ilegal siempre se hace con un coyote, recalca en varias ocasiones el joven padre de dos niñas. ¿Por qué? Porque son quienes manejan «los códigos» para comunicarse con autoridades migratorias y hasta secuestradores.

Para Jonás no fue un problema entrar a Guatemala, el gran sacrificio fue al momento de pisar suelo mexicano. Allí el viaje comienza cuando llega a Tapachula, Chiapas, donde meses antes otorgaban visas humanitarias que, según dice, han detenido por la gran ola migratoria que se está movilizando por las fronteras. Lo mismo pasa en las oficinas del Instituto Nacional de Migración en San Pedro, en Tapanatepec, Oaxaca, donde tampoco pudo conseguir el preciado documento que les permite circular con mayores libertades.

Así que Jonás y los demás migrantes que lo acompañaban recorrieron cientos de kilómetros sin permisos. Y fueron detenidos en un sinnúmero de ocasiones por las autoridades policiales y militares mexicanas, quienes les pedían dinero para «su aguinaldo navideño».

«El dinero sin conexión es un papel obsoleto»

En el bus que lo trasladaba desde Tapachula a Ciudad de México había 16 migrantes, solo llegaron diez.

«El problema comienza en que tú tienes que ir pagando desde el comienzo de México hasta el final, pero todo es con ‘claves’, por eso es que los coyotes son más que necesarios en esa vuelta», dice el joven que era miembro del Ejército de la República Dominicana y decidió abandonar la institución por los maltratos y bajos salarios que asegura le ofrecían.

Los contactos pagan para que cada migrante esté seguro. Y eso les permitió que la mayoría saliera ilesa de un secuestro perpetrado por una banda.

Jonás recuerda que una noche estaban en un vehículo y se les ponchó un neumático, lo que les obligó a detenerse. De repente aparecieron unos 30 hombres fuertemente armados con la intención de secuestrarlos. Ante la amenaza, el chofer les dijo un código, pero ellos no entendían de qué estaba hablando. El problema era que se habían detenido en un área que no les correspondía.

«Hasta que el chofer no pudo contactarse con el contacto más grande, a nosotros nos tuvieron retenidos aproximadamente tres horas y nos quitaron todo, ya sea celulares o dinero», explica Jonás.

Momentos antes de liberarlos, hubo un dominicano que tuvo un altercado con la banda. Jonás vio cómo lo golpearon en varias ocasiones y lo dejaron moribundo. Al final de la pesadilla, el «jefe mayor» llamó al encargado de la banda y autorizó la liberación. También les devolvieron  el dinero y el celular. Todos se fueron, pero no dejaron ir a su compatriota. Nunca supieron del paradero de aquel criollo.

«Nosotros teníamos impotencia, nosotros queríamos atacar, pero 30 con armas largas y diferentes palos, eso era como una turba de personas», dice.

Desde ahí tuvieron que caminar en medio de la noche, porque la banda se quedó con el vehículo averiado. Y después de cuatro horas caminando, una patrulla policial los detuvo para también cobrarles 100 dólares, porque no tenían ningún documento legal en México.

Al llegar a Ciudad de México los llevaron hacia Monterrey en un vehículo privado, les tomó 10 horas.

La peor parte del viaje

Llegaron de noche y con la temperatura a -2 grados celsius, tuvieron que dormir en el piso, y sin nada que les abrigara.

«Estuvimos haciendo fuego con lo que encontrábamos, ni siquiera nos imaginábamos con lo que nos íbamos a enfrentar porque los coyotes se fueron a un hotel tranquilos, y nos dejaron a más de 400 migrantes, había niños, ancianos, de todos los países que ahora mismo están pasando por problemas humanitarios», cuenta.

A las 6:00 de la mañana del otro día salieron hacia la frontera de Piedras Negras, que estaba, en teoría, a dos horas de distancia desde Monterrey, pero fue un camino que se extendió por 12 horas para evadir retenes y las autoridades estadounidenses.

Para ese entonces el Gobierno estadounidense había advertido a los migrantes no cruzar la frontera con México debido a las gélidas temperaturas. Pero tanto Jonás y como los demás cruzaron a pie el río Bravo, un momento que no fue para nada fácil, según dice.

«La temperatura es inigualable, tú te estás metiendo en un agua de hielo, que ni siquiera te puedo definir, porque es superfrío… Yo vi personas que iban con niños que para no soltar los niños soltaban su ropa», explica, añadiendo que cuando salieron del río estaban empapados de agua y no les entregaron ropa seca del otro lado de la frontera. A más de dos semanas de su llegada, todavía tiene una «gripe que no se le quita».

«La vuelta no es México. Un migrante no vale nada, desde que migras ya perdiste el derecho a la libertad, pero ya por vergüenza o por el qué dirán, uno no le da para atrás, pero yo estoy arrepentido de esta vuelta, si yo le pudiera dar para atrás yo me fuera, pero ya le tengo que dar para alante porque esto ha sido un sacrificio», lamenta.

Jonás pagó 3,000 dólares para emprender su tortuoso camino. Tuvo que pedir prestado y hacer «rejuegos».

Hasta el momento no ha conseguido un trabajo fijo en Nueva York, ciudad en la que ahora reside.
