La ministra de Relaciones Exteriores jamaicana, Kamina Johnson Smith, anunció este martes la suspensión de los servicios consulares en Haití luego de que hombres armados atacaran e incendiaran partes del recinto del consulado de Jamaica en Puerto Príncipe.

En un breve mensaje, Smith confirmó que el edificio, que alberga tanto el consulado de Jamaica como un concesionario de automóviles, «fue incendiado y saqueado por bandas criminales».

«Informamos al público que los servicios consulares en Haití se suspenden indefinidamente», indicó.

Johnson Smith dijo, además, que estas circunstancias reafirman «la determinación de Jamaica de participar en el apoyo a todos los esfuerzos para devolver a Haití la paz y la prosperidad que su pueblo merece».

En la breve declaración, la ministra no hizo referencia a la reunión de tres días que se lleva a cabo en Jamaica para encontrar una solución a la crisis política, socioeconómica y de seguridad en Haití.

Esa reunión, que concluye hoy sin que hayan trascendido detalles, ha congregado a representantes de varios grupos del sector público y privado de Haití con el objetivo generar consenso y permitir una participación inclusiva en un entorno neutral.

Tanto Jamaica como Haití son miembros de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom), una organización regional integrada por quince países.
