El estadounidense Gervonta Davis dejó la escena lista para su mega pelea de abril contra su compatriota Ryan García después de derrotar por nocaut técnico en el noveno round al dominicano Héctor Luis García en la Capital One Arena de Washington.

Con la victoria, Gervonta, además de “asegurar” la lucrativa pelea ante ‘King’ Ryan en peso pactado de 136 libras, retuvo el título de campeón regular ligero de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo (AMB) que ostenta desde 2019 tras noquear al cubano Yuriorkis Gamboa en el round 12.

El púgil norteamericano de 28 años empezó lento, pero a partir del cuarto round tomó las riendas del combate ante un rival que no le regaló nada y fue competitivo hasta que renunció a salir al noveno asalto.

“Cuando lo toqué sabía que estaba lastimado”, dijo Gervonta en el centro del cuadrilátero al finalizar el pleito. “Tengo que seguir trabajando. Soy un peleador. Siempre gano y aprendo”.

Sobre su oponente indicó que el estilo de Héctor Luis García le molestó un poco porque no está acostumbrado a pelear contra zurdos. “Estaba tratando de vencerlo mentalmente. Tratando de engañarlo con mis manos y mis ojos. Él es un peleador de primer nivel, así que tuve que atraerlo…”

Entretanto, ‘El Androide’ García explicó que la causa de su renuncia fue que “recibí un golpe en la cabeza (al final del octavo round) y no podía ver, no sabía dónde estaba. Todavía me duele la cabeza. No podía ver, pero mi visión está de vuelta. Hasta ese momento la pelea iba bastante bien, estaba encontrando los espacios para golpearlo y creo que también lo lastimé”.

Ahora Davis tiene balance de 28 victorias sin derrotas, incluidos 26 nocauts, que lo deja con el 92.86 por ciento de sus triunfos por la vía del cloroformo y en la antesala del combate más grande de su carrera.
